Garage Door Opener FAQs
What Are Garage Door Openers?
Garage door openers are electronic, motorized devices designed to automatically rather than manually open and close garage doors. They are sold and installed separately from the garage door itself, and may be simple one-button devices, sophisticated and integrated smart devices, or many steps in between.
What Features Are Common with the Best Garage Door Openers?
The best garage door openers are often quiet, fast, secure, and powerful. They include a multitude of safety features integrated into their mechanical and technological aspects of the garage door openers. They are home network compatible, smartphone network compatible, and integrate with your smart home lights, thermostats, gates and doors.
Can Users Self-Install the Best Garage Door Openers?
The user can install most of the best garage door openers themselves and manufacturers often include detailed instructions, videos and technical support that will allow DIY homeowners to self-install. If homeowners lack basic home improvement skills, we recommend professional installation. Incorrect installation can become a safety hazard or void warranties.
What Are Smart Garage Door Openers?
Smart garage door openers are designed to be used with a variety of connectivity options. Some are integrated with a smartphone, smart home, or smart device compatible with apps. Some integrate with whole home network systems.
Should Users Choose the Most Powerful Motor?
Choosing the most powerful motor is not always the best option. Users want to select a motor with enough power for the type and the number of doors to be lifted, but too much power can mean more noise than is necessary. High powered motors will also ensure longevity. One-third horsepower is sufficient for a single garage door opener while a double door will need at least ½ horsepower motor. If you have an over-sized door or a door made of heavy materials, users will need a higher power motor.
What Are Drive Systems and Which Are Best?
The best garage door openers may have belt drives, screw drives, and chain drives. Belt drive models are more expensive but are quieter. Chain and screw drives are often much less costly. Belt drives use a soft rubber belt to move the garage door which may be constructed with fiberglass, Kevlar, or steel-reinforced rubber. These are ideal for attached garages as they are very quiet.
Chain drives operate in a similar style to a belt drive with the exception they use a chain instead of a rubber-like belt. These are like a bike chain. Chain drives last a long time, are more affordable than belt drives, and can be operated manually when the power is out. Screw drives are unusual, but they exist with some of the best garage door openers. They use an extended, screw-like mechanism to lift and close the door and have few parts. Maintenance is recommended with screw drives. These work best for light garage doors.
What Types of Power Are Available?
The best garage door openers may operate with AC power or DC power. They will all plug directly into standard power outlets; the DC powered openers will convert into AC power. DC powered garage door openers are quieter than AC powered models, they operate more smoothly, and they have the added benefit of often being compatible with battery backups.
