Have you ever brought camera film to labs for rinsing and wondered, how does this process work? What is in the 35mm film developing kit?
The cost of coating and scanning a roll of black and white film ranges from $ 7-10, which is a very cheap cost, and you will wonder why it takes so much time to get exposed to chemicals and jars in a dark room. What do we do in the hours to self-film and develop photos?
But for those of you who love to film, I encourage you to make your own film at least once. Directly processing your own film roll is a fun experience, giving you absolute control over the technical process and so your personal impression in the photo will not stop at the moment of shooting. This also helps you ‘see lights and shadows better. The same film but when self-coated by different methods will bring many different image effects.
The black and white film coating process is not complicated and toxic as many people think it can be done in the bathroom or dark kitchen at home. However, keep in mind that chemicals are toxic when they come into direct contact with the body. However, keep in mind that chemicals are toxic when they come into direct contact with the body. Therefore, wearing appropriate clothing, practicing in a well-ventilated area and wearing glasses and a mask every time practicing film coating is essential. At the same time, you should always keep the chemicals on the ground or low to prevent them from falling and damaging.
In this article, we will take a look at the ‘mysterious veil’, learn about the products of 35mm film developing kit and all the steps in the process of turning a film into images.

Black And White Film Coated Diary
Story Coating and Scanning Film – Different or the same?
Search Google for a while, it was all about this problem, but I still wanted to synthesize and scavenge my knowledge here. There are many questions and still do not fully understand. Hope someone will comment when you read my miscellaneous article.
After the roll of film to ensure the film does not stick to light, which easily causes film damage.
Please remember to film and film the photos are completely different. The labs will coat the film, that is, put it into the washing machine through special chemicals. Each type of film has a different coating method and medicine, of course the price is also different. 4 kinds of films:
- Coated C41 film: for negative color film. Negative color films are also available in a variety that cannot be coated using this C41 process. Finish film will show up, negative film will show brown brown color if illuminated under light, like X-ray film. After completing the coating, it is turned into an image (this is photo development). Some labs do not have an image development service, but nowadays it is scanning for the purpose of storing on a computer, USB or on the network.
- Film coated BW: for negative black and white film.
- Film cine: this kind of film maybe anyone who plays a lot will know, it is the type to film the film extracted from a film cake to a regular film (24-36 like a normal film). Install the camera as usual. The only difference I think is the film color, which has many interesting colors.
- Positive film (slide film): the film will appear on the color, the color will be displayed on the film’s surface, not brown as the negative film. Then scan or scan the image is similar to the negative film.
The lab scans will be completed and emailed you leave, fast and slow time will depend on the lab. Fast, then within a day, or later 2-3 days. Store for a few days on Drive, Dropbox, … or permanently, depending on the lab. The same is true for the coated film, after receiving the scanned copy you do not need the original, they will destroy it after a while.
The darker hobby of the film photographer
Certainly for everyone who has been in film from people who have been with film for a long time, and so-called ‘wet processes’ (manual processes to come up with a complete image). For those who are new to film and film as a “lost art” with their 35mm film developing kit, the dark room – dark room for someone is always a pleasure, discovery, a secret or just a self I am happy and satisfied with the photo in my hand that in order to create it, photographers have to spend such a great amount of time and effort that digital photographers can only “shake their heads, stick out their tongues”.
Generally speaking, in the so-called “technical technology” era like now, film photography in terms of time, convenience as well as quality, economy certainly cannot be compared with photography. number. But why are there still people who are so passionate about film photography and handcrafted photo-making processes, passionate about spending hours in dark rooms mixing, picking, shoving, rinsing, washing … for hours to come up with a photograph as expected?
Black and White Film Coated Diary
Recommendation: You should only practice with black and white film because the chemicals are non-toxic and the washing process does not require strict control of temperature or time. The C41 and RA4 process for color film coating has a negative health effect if directly contacted regularly, the disposal of waste chemicals is more complicated and if not done properly, it will harm the environment.
Chemical
Developer (current drug): There are 2 most popular types: HC-110 and D-76. Both produce the same quality as the HC-110 for a slightly sharper negative, but lose to the D-76 in tonal range. I recommend using the D-76 because the time and temperature requirements are not so strict, while the HC-110 reduces the coating time significantly so that less error is allowed. (350k for 3.8 liters). This is a powder that can be mixed with water and can last for 6-8 months.
Stop bath: I do not support the use of discontinuous drugs because acids will corrode the film. Water can completely replace chemicals at this stage.
Fixer: Helps film to be stable and unchanged when exposed to light. (250k for 10 liters). The drug is sold in liquid form, 1 liter bottle mixed with water into 10 liters, used for 6-8 months.
Photo Flo: Helps the negative surface to become slippery, so when exposed, water will not accumulate on the film. (150k for 1 small bottle can be used for a long time)
Necessary tools
- A ‘dark room’: May be anywhere with no light. For me it was a bathroom with no windows and rags blocking the light from entering. Speaking of the dark room, people who did not know it might think this was a laboratory with complicated machines, tools, and bottles, but the truth was that the dark room could in some way be. the wardrobe that the photographer fits, or just a special black bag that allows the photographer to open the film box and mount the film in the film-tank.
A dark room has basically all three conditions: running water, “dark enough” and a well-ventilated door system. Firstly, water is needed because after the film is coated with chemicals, the film washing process is also very important, this process removes all the chemicals left on the film to help the film have a longer lifespan. Second is the most important one, when removing the film from the box, the film will not be able to withstand the light (uncoated) and at worst the film will burn out completely and at least be exposed. This is shown in long speckled or long light streaks across the film. Third, the ventilation system helps to regulate the air in the dark room and avoids the need to inhale chemical vapors (although black and white film washing chemicals are not toxic, work with it for many hours in a closed environment may cause headaches, dizziness, etc.).
- A film washing box (developing tank) with a capacity of 600ml can wash two 35mm rolls or a 120mm roll (prices range 600k-750k). Buy at 2E Quang Trung Hanoi or Crop Lab HCMC.
- One 500ml measuring cup and two 1l measuring cups. Buy them at chemical stores or medical supplies.
- Steel wool. Buying at building materials stores.
- Thermometer. Buy them at chemical stores or medical supplies.
- Staple.
- Pull.
Prepare
- Put the film in the dark and roll it on the plastic reel that comes with the film washing box. You should practice this with underexposed film before wrapping the important film in a dark room. You can see the instructions here.
- Once the film washing box is closed, you can turn on the light.
- Mix 300ml D-76 with 300ml of water (1 + 1) and prepare 600ml fixer, both at 20 ° C. Use more hot or cold water to ensure the temperature if necessary. Don’t worry if the temperature difference is about 1-2 degrees Celsius.
- 3l of clean water at 20 ° C.
- Look up “massive dev chart” to know the exact film time. The film I’m going to be coated is Kodak Tri-X 400 so the coating time is 13 minutes at 1 + 1 dissolution temperature 20 ° C.
Rinsing process
- Turn on the timer.
- Fill the film washing box with clean water at 20 ° C and stir continuously for 2 minutes.
- After 2 minutes, drain the water from the box and pour 600ml of D-76 mixed in above. Make sure the D-76 temperature is approximately 20 ° C.
- Stir the can for the first 30 seconds and then 5 seconds per minute thereafter. After each stir, tap the bottom of the box three times hard to prevent bubbles from accumulating.
- After 13 minutes, drain the developer from the box (developer is safe to pour straight down the drain) and immediately fill the box with clean water at 20 ° C.
- Stirring continuously for 2 minutes, then change with new water and keep stirring for 2 more minutes.
- Next, drain the water and pour the fixer into the box (the best fix time is 8-10 minutes).
- Stir for the first 30 seconds and then 10 seconds per minute thereafter. After each stirring, tap the bottom of the box three times hard to prevent bubbles from accumulating.
- After 8 minutes, rinse the fixer into the measuring cup.
- You can now open the film box (negative safe for light, yoohoo!) And fill the box with tap water. Then, turn on the low stream for 15-20 minutes to wash off the film from chemicals.
- After 20 minutes, you turn off the tap, fill the film-coated box with water and add 3-5 drops of photo flo. Gently rotate the film roll in the solution for about 1 minute. Now your film is ready to dry.
- Hang on a hook, use paper clips on both ends of the film to prevent the film from curling.
- Depending on the season, your film will dry in about 1.5-2 hours.
Finish
- Since the fixer cannot be poured directly into the drain, you need to let the mulch soak in the solution for about 2 days to absorb all the silver before pouring. Very simple!
- When the film is dry, you can roll them up in the enclosed plastic box or store them in the print-file if available.
Tips storing unused camera film
Here are three reasons to convince you to keep the film
- Error scanning film.
I do not know how many times I discovered a scan error in the image, such as dust particles in the example. With the original film in hand, I can easily re-scan it.
- Technology for making photos is more and more developed.
Fifteen years ago no one would have imagined that home self-made photo files would be as good as they are now. So it’s probably wise to keep movies, because in the future there are plenty of possibilities to deal with them.
- Uncertainty about the long-term existence of digital.
Now we know for sure that films can last for more than a century if stored properly, and CDs or hard drives aren’t certain. If one day the hard drive fails or the Icloud account goes down, I still feel secure because my films will last forever.
Instructions for storing unused camera film
If you are using 35mm film, you probably know that it is getting rarer. And this forces photographers to accumulate the film in bulk to use it over time. Manufacturers often pre-print the expiration date on film rolls, but actually expired films can still be used and still produce good and accurate images? Using film dates will sometimes create unique effects that many of you like, but when you have important shots to take, it’s best to make sure your film is secured. well managed and completely capable of accurate photos. The following are my shares about film preservation.
Use The Refrigerator For Short Term Storage
The simplest method is to store the film in the refrigerator. It may sound strange, but actually storing film at a lower temperature than room temperature can increase the life of the film. Just putting it in the cooler compartment of the refrigerator is okay, preferably the compartment at the refrigerator door, so it will be easy to find or smell the food.
You can keep it in a paper box, or just keep the plastic film box to not take up a lot of cabinet space. If you are storing multiple films at the same time, you can buy a plastic food container that holds several rolls of film in one place. It is better to label each film box so that it can be easily retrieved when needed.
Store film in the refrigerator to store the film for a long time
If you are not planning on using these rolls for more than the next 6 months, you should throw them in the freezer next to ice cream. The lower the temperature, the longer the film degrades. It is best to use a plastic film container to prevent water from entering.
Thaw Film Before Use
Refrigerated films must be thawed at room temperature before being used. The defrost time will depend on the defrost time. This step is extremely important as it will reduce the chance of the film being distorted from the temperature difference, and possibly damaging the camera’s internal components.
After thawing, open the film container under soft light. And make sure that the film is not slightly cold before it is inserted into the camera.
Avoid Film Away From Heat Sources When Not In Use
It is safest to store it in the refrigerator, but what about when you have to carry film around to take pictures? It is important to minimize exposure to outside temperatures. And absolutely do not leave movies in the trunk of a motorcycle or in a car parked in the hot sun. If you need to shoot in hot weather, storing film in an insulated freezer is the best solution.
When going through airport security
X-Ray has absolutely no effect on films with sensitivities lower than ISO800. If you have films higher than ISO800 or you do not want to risk bringing the film through security, ask the security staff to check it manually for you.
Film should not be left in the camera for too long
This is easier said than done. Many people often leave the film in the camera until the film has been captured, causing the film to degrade if left in the camera for too long. If you have important shots, it is best to try to capture all the rolls, or remove unused shots and remove the film as soon as possible.
Closing Thought
To transform photos taken from film cameras into actual images, filmmakers need the utmost meticulousness and thoroughness by their 35mm film developing kit.
We learned to embrace the natural look of a film, instead of searching among hundreds of photos and weighing every facial expression and eye contact. What makes a good film photo sometimes does not come from a balanced face or flawless skin, but your carefree smile in an unexpected moment, or the way you weave your fingers gently when talking about one thing you love.
For longtime film players, it is equally interesting to find their own standards for temperature, concentration, time, even find the recipe for specific drugs for each. film type as well as light characteristics, camera parameters of each film roll, each frame taken. Many times these experiences will lead you to unimaginable results, which is especially interesting when developing the film. If you are new to playing, you should go to reputable film establishments. Gradually, you can make your own at home if you want to develop the film yourself, because that’s the interesting point besides holding the camera.
There isn’t much to feel embarrassed of, you’re not lonely. There is a lot of assistance and help. Talk to us on how you felt and talk to friends and relatives if you may. All the necessary information is now available to choose your best 35mm film developing kit. Choose one of your choice and you will certainly keep safe when using it.
